Consider the saying “give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime,” and you will come to understand the unique educational aspect of the Power Packs Project. Our mission is to actively improve the mental and physical health of children by helping their parents provide nutritious meals over weekends when school breakfast and lunch programs are unavailable. In accordance with the Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation guidelines, Power Packs Project enhances “child mental resilience, physical health and health habits” while “strengthening parenting as a way to promote the healthy mental and behavioral development of children.” Currently, Power Packs are being distributed, both during the school year and during summers, at 70 sites in 13 school districts. We have over 450 volunteers and serve 2,300 families every week.
Power Packs provides food and nutritional information to families who are food insecure when school lunch programs are not available to them, namely over the weekend and during summer vacation. The goal of the program is to empower and educate our 2,300 families on ways to regularly provide healthy meals on a budget so that children can return to school, well-fed and ready to learn. Power Packs provides long-term solutions to combat childhood hunger.
